"16" (7" hoop on silk)
The Motherhood Project is a collection of small mixed media works made during my first years of motherhood. What began as a project to help me make sense of the tangled web of identities (mother-artist-human) while mothering a newborn/infant — transformed into a project to support me in recentering and reclaiming a sense of self amidst mothering a wild, beautiful, rage-filled toddler. I self-title each piece a ‘container of devotion’ due to the cyclical nature to my art I’ve experienced since becoming a mother — each piece represents the devotion that resides deep within my bones + supports me in returning to the call of the artist.
The making: This hoop is meticulously crafted with several layers of acrylic + water, iridescent powdered pigment (to add texture + shine) and embroidery on 100% natural ivory silk chiffon. She is framed in a 7” bamboo embroidery hoop.
Design Notes:
Hang with a small nail on a gallery wall to add a lovely organic element or rest against a mantle or shelf.
Due to the sheer nature of silk chiffon, any wall texture + color will show through slightly. For context, this hoop was photographed on a wall with orange peel texture and a soft, cream colored paint.
